Our Philosophy

Resilience

Resilience is the capacity to withstand, adapt, and grow in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, and stress. This includes dealing with depression, family and relationship problems, bullying, and the loss of a loved one. Resilience is the ability to transcend challenges despite the odds. It is a trait inherent in everyone and can be cultivated and developed in anyone.

The Helix

The helix, or spiral shape, is a universal symbol of resilience found throughout nature, from galaxies and weather patterns to the DNA of living organisms. Sunflowers, vine tendrils, pine cones, ferns, nautilus shells, seahorses, antelope horns, and even human fingerprints exhibit the helix structure. This structure is underpinned by the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical principle found in various plants. Due to its stability and universality, the helix is foundational to sacred architecture worldwide, from Pre-Columbian sites to Irish Neolithic sites, churches, and mosques. The helix has withstood the test of time, religion, and biological and cultural influences.

In its essence, the helix epitomizes resilience. For instance, a plant root encountering a barrier will twist and turn into a helix to overcome the challenge, thus creating beauty and stability.

The Resilient Helix

Wellness for Tots to Tall People

The Resilient Helix symbolizes adaptability and perseverance, flourishing through adversity. Guided by the helix, we help individuals trust their inherent nature to become victors over their struggles. Our team comprises psychiatrists and psychotherapists who develop resilience in individuals and families across all life stages, from toddlers to adults. We understand and appreciate developmental and life stages, working with toddlers, preschoolers, teens, and adults to navigate developmental challenges. Our combined experiences bring a comprehensive approach to mental health wellness.

Biopsychological Models of Attachment Theories

Our approach to individual and family well-being is guided by the biopsychological models of attachment theories. Creating anchored connections to ourselves and others is a complex human task. Early experiences of attunement and love build brain structures that determine lifelong relational patterns. These neural structures encode unconscious interpersonal templates that shape our world experiences.

Attachment and interconnectedness are crucial to individual well-being and systemic functional wholeness. Disrupted early attachments alter our nervous system, creating fear, sadness, or anger-based templates. New experiences and relationships are then perceived through these fear-based rules, causing distress and impairing emotional regulation, problem-solving, and the ability to develop healthy boundaries and fulfilling relationships. These rigid relational patterns hinder wholehearted living. Fortunately, our brains are malleable and can grow new neurons and form new neural connections based on new attachment experiences. Our team uses neurobiologically informed treatment modalities to guide brain rewiring and foster new ways of healing and flourishing.

Services

Psychotherapy for Individuals

The Resilient Helix offers psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and adults. Individual therapy sessions are unique and tailored to the individual’s needs. The benefits of individual therapy include deepening self-awareness, enhancing self-acceptance, and strengthening core identity to thrive in life. Our team employs various therapeutic approaches, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR), play therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mentalization-based therapies, and motivational interviewing.

Psychotherapy for Couples

Human beings are inherently relational, seeking intimate bonds for both physical survival and emotional well-being. Satisfying relationships are key to happiness and longevity. The Resilient Helix provides marriage counseling, couples therapy, and premarital counseling, focusing on communication, compromise, and empathic listening to promote healthier and more productive unions. In couples therapy, the couple itself is considered the client. Our therapists offer both individual and couples therapy, often as complementary treatments.

Psychotherapy for Families

Family relationships are integral to psychological health and wellness. Emotional and behavioral difficulties often stem from problematic family dynamics that have been transmitted through generations. Family therapy aims to help families problem-solve, change communication and behavioral patterns, and develop healthier belief systems. Our providers offer family therapy to bring about a healthier family dynamic.

Child, Adolescent & Adult Psychiatry

Dr. Maria Carolina Court, a board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, provides psychiatric evaluations for individuals across the lifespan. Psychiatric evaluations aim to comprehensively understand emotional and behavioral difficulties from both biological and psychosocial standpoints. This includes assessing early developmental environment, genetic and family history, substance use, lifestyle, medical illnesses, and treatments. Understanding someone’s life story, including family relationships, childhood events, academic and social successes and challenges, and cultural beliefs, is crucial. Collateral information from schools, partners, parents, prior treatment providers, and psychological and academic testing can be invaluable.

Psychiatric Treatment

Psychiatric treatment often involves medications to treat emotional problems, but sometimes medications alone are insufficient or not indicated. Psychotherapy (individual, family, couples, group) can be the most effective way to address emotional challenges. Dr. Court provides both psychotherapy and medication management, along with lifestyle changes, academic plans for children, psychological and cognitive testing referrals, and emotional support pet recommendations.

Clinical Supervision

The Resilient Helix offers clinical supervision to psychiatry residents, psychologists, and marriage and family therapy interns. We emphasize the importance of the therapist’s self and honor the lived experiences brought to the career. Our goal is to nurture innate and learned wisdom by creating a safe, non-judgmental environment for developing therapists. We provide weekly individual and group supervision.

Case Consultation

Our organization offers internal and community-based case consultations through weekly treatment team meetings. These meetings ensure unity in patient health care, discussing patient care, treatment approaches, new perspectives, and the latest research. Each treatment team member is an owner of The Resilient Helix, ensuring consistent quality patient care.
