Horrible gym. Terrible staff. Old machines. I signed up online for a one-week free pass and was denied when I got there. I was a member 2 years ago, but the employee said that to be eligible for the free week pass you can’t have EVER been a member (very loud on the “ever”). I picked up my phone and showed him it’s actually a 6 months minimum, therefore proving him wrong. He never apologized for giving me the wrong information. Instead, he said “well, it’s still not up to me”. The manager (very professional by the way) showed up and it was so confusing I gave up. I wouldn’t work out there even if they paid me. I went to the swim and athletic gym on 53rd street and avenue 6 1/2. Awesome gym, awesome staff. 18 dollars/day a great deal.
Gym equipment is more than adequate for the $, but there are always multiple treadmills out of order, and the locker rooms are frequently dirty, largely because of misuse and disrespectful gym customers. There have been at least 3 thefts of personal items in the last two months that I am aware of, including my own items. You should only come to this gym if it’s your last choice option.
An extremely mixed experience, some staff are amazing and some are plain horrible. The conditions and quality of the facilities are generally pretty gross but they have a great location and are one of the only gyms in Manhattan that has the classes I like. I’ve had great interactions with some staff (Mary is amazing! As are most of the instructors) whereas on more than one occasion the front desk appear to actually try to derail your workout for membership and PT sales, for example Steve Cruz. Needless to say my perceived value of a membership declined to 0 after those interactions.
Update : I am ending my membership at this dump today. In the last two months, the pool and/or sauna/steam/whirlpool has been closed nearly every time I go. They need to get their act together. There may be new regulations, but other gyms seemed to have gotten it together. Ridiculous to expect you to pay their dues with the amenities rarely working!!
I must write this, as I find it disturbing that three staff people were laughing and sharing videos they took of guests who they thought fell asleep on the weight machines. Do you realize how unethical this is??? Not the first time I’ve heard staff gossip and talk so rudely about guests.
I only keep my membership here because the West Coast facilities are decent. If I wasn’t traveling there for work, I would end my membership, the NYC east midtown facility is absolutely terrible!!
The guy Paul on reception, is a lovely guy, always greets everyone and remembers their name. The gym has what you need if you’re a serious gym goer. The treadmills need changing as it seems that every other one doesn’t work. My thing is the changing rooms, they really need a regular cleaner as sometimes it gets disgusting in there and I’m not that fussy. I go because it’s so convenient to where I work otherwise I would find an alternative.
Big enough gym with all the equipment I may want to use. Friendly gym staff and lots of classes to take. I find classes are crowded some day of the week after work, maybe it is better in the morning. Another thing I use a lot is the steam room and swimming pool, the pool is not standard indoor pool, it is smaller but long enough to be exercisable.
BE CAREFUL WITH THIS GYM. My girlfriend and I signed up for the pool, they force fed us the PT. I got the worst one and he screwed up big time. When that happened, I was given another trainer to finish up what sessions I had left. Well what about the other sloppy sessions? And the fact that the trainer was boring, lazy, was injured, and just plain horrible? Nothing, they said they could give me an extra session. I think that is wrong, I participated in 6 sessions with the bad trainer and 4 with the good one and in 1 month got phenomenal results with the new one. Hmmm, 24HR Fit, I am trying to tell you something. Well I have taken this up with the BBB. OH! and the pool, there are water bugs in there that like to swim with the patrons. GROSS!!!
Great location. I think they have a great process in getting you into personal training sessions and are good with matching you with the right trainer to help you with your workout goals.
Cardio equipment needs to be more properly maintained. Could use more cardio/dance classes at this location. For a gym located in a prime area, I expected more. For example, the facilities and cardio equipment to be in tip top shape all the time.
24 Hour is a great gym. They have just about anything you could want to do to get a workout, including kettlebells. The spin classes are excellent, Mari and Patty are the best in the morning hours. Showers are decent, and the locker room is generally okay. The swimming lap pool is a nice value-add to get in some laps.
Weight equipment is in good condition. The workout area is large and has lots of equipment. The spin room is really nice. The pool is awkward if you’re a swimmer…it’s only one lane and 17 meters so if you’re looking for a swim workout go elsewhere. Note that this is a ULTRAsport location so you have to pay extra.
My wife and I both have a membership and work out at this location regularly. It wasn’t until later on in the evening that my wife realized that she had left her watch inside her locker. She told me that it was locker #79 so I quickly called to see if anyone had turned in her watch. I explained the situation on the phone to the person who identified himself to me as George Corona. I was barely able to finish my sentence when I was cut off and told that there was no watch turned in or found. Disappointed with the fraction of a second effort made, I kept optimistic considering my wife knew the exact locker number she had used. A quick check of the locker was all that was needed. I kindly asked if he could please look in locker 79 or have someone look for the watch in locker 79, a task which would take only a few seconds to do. George Corona then told me that he was the only person at the desk and he would not be able to do anything for me until 6 am… I explained to George Corona that the watch had much more sentimental value than Monetary value so there was a good possibility that the watch could still be in locker 79. Once again George Corona told me in what I can only describe to you as his ”Cold And Lack Of Care or Concern attitude” that nothing can be done until 6 am. Not once did he offer to take my name or information in case something is found and not once did he attempt to make even the smallest of efforts to help in our search for my wife’s watch. I will say that in all my years as a member, I have never had a negative experience with any team member at the 53rd and Lex location. The staff is one that I would only describe as Professional, Courteous, and Hard Working. One Rotten Apple should not be a reflection of their efforts. Efforts that are the reason my wife and I have stayed members of 24 fitness
Only decent 24 hour fitness in NY. Treadmill are broken and gym tends to be crowded after work, but they do have a lot more equipment than other ones I’ve been to. I used to frequent this one over the Midtown location, but decided to come to this one. However, after someone tried to break into my locker tonight, I may look to switch to another branch.
It’s a great gym. Admittedly it could be a bigger but good use of what space they have. I like the classes a lot – tons of energy created by the instructors. The locker rooms are stocked and clean, a good thing considering the amount of traffic. The people working there are approachable. Is there Wifi? Not sure, but def no cell service for me down there.
The quality gym at an average price. I pay $70 a month and joined 2 years ago after NYSC raised the prices. I was initially very impressed when I joined it had not been open very long. It has since gone downhill, but is still OK. It is slightly dirty, but the selection of equipment is still very good. It gets very busy during rush hours so try to avoid it. Otherwise, I still think it is one of the best-valued gyms in NYC, it got 3 stars because there are better locations than the 53rd street one in NYC.
Rud staff. I signed up for a 1-week free trial. Staff asked me 22 questions, “Which gym do I have a membership to? He said I must pay a $ 22-day pass only because I have been in the gym for 1 day only in other states. Unwelcoming. Rud. Moved to another gym with good machines, a pool, and polite staff.
Unimpressive gym for a super-premium price. I’ve been to 10+ sports, and 15+ super-sport locations across the country that have a much greater variety of equipment, and are far cleaner with friendlier staff than this location. 15 minutes to be helped while the front desk guy was texting on his phone and “looking for his sweatshirt”. 4 days and 2 emails with no response from gym manager, it is like they aren’t even trying.
Blink, Mid-City Gym, Crunch Fitness, NYSC, Richie’s Gym, JDI Barbell even the infamous Planet Fitness… all be better alternatives providing more bang for your buck.
I have been a member of this chain of gyms since late 2012. Soon, I will move to a gym of better value. I can only recommend 24HF *if* you need a gym that is open all of the time (note: even this gym closes during certain holidays, which is LAME). With the exception of that reason, there is not much that makes this gym “special” from other gyms. And it is expensive (call it $90 per month). This particular location has a pervasive issue with equipment not working properly. Unacceptable. And it is completely underground, so it can be a tad “dungeon” in its feel. Most of the clientele is annoying (e.g., weights are left out; people scream the song playing on their headphones), but that seems to be the norm. in NYC.
Equipment is new and of good quality. Could use an extra squat rack however (only one). Staff is nice. There’s a pool, cycling room, and group classes if you into that. Overpriced compared to 24s outside of NYC but $70/month is understandable for the area. Just watch out which locker you use. The bottom latch on a few of them are flat out broken.
Disappointing that there are no bumper plates or a deadlift platform. I use them for front squats and deadlifts. They have one set of bumper plates reserved for trainees. You charge $70/month and you can’t get extra sets of bumper plates… The staff told me they asked the company for them years ago. This might change in the future.
Love all the trainers – nonstop training – getting fit in a hurry! Very flexible hours – easy app too. Everybody at 24 Hour Fitness is friendly and helpful.
I use to be a member at the gym and the staff is amazing. They listen and are open to help. Also, the facility is clean and the equipment is organized.
I would definitely recommend trying this gym.
The trainer wasn’t informative either, we kinda just jumped into the class. It was super intense and super fast! I just wish she broke it down and explained the movements better so that we weren’t all over the place. But she was pretty intense so not sure if she would’ve taken the criticism well. But overall, a great experience, and recommend it as a group outing!
Going from “Super Sport” in California and Washington to “Ultra Sport” in NYC has actually been quite the downgrade. So many lockers broken… I was searching for one that wasn’t trashed when the guy next to me told me how two weeks prior a random man (not a 24 member) walked by the front desk and into the locker room (no one noticed or cared). He cut the man’s lock and stole 6 grand worth of stuff from the locker. 24 says it’s the guest’s fault, even though they have video surveillance footage. This can’t be the only instance.. the state of lockers makes it seem that quite a few have been broken into.
There are probably only two sets of bar clips in the entire gym, and towels after the evening rush are scarce (especially at the SoHo location). The space is decent (much smaller than most), but expect to see used towels hanging all over equipment and weights everywhere. The only thing “ultra” about the Midtown location is that it’s ultra run down and unkempt. I’d look elsewhere for a gym (Equinox if you can afford it).
I’ve been to 7 different gym chains in NYC and 24 Hour Fitness is the 3rd best gym brand. The first and second best cost twice as much for membership and the others were either too crowded or too dirty for me. Therefore, 24 Hour Fitness is the best gym for my needs.
A reasonably inexpensive gym for the area. Lots of weight equipment but during regular business hours, especially rush hour, super crowded.
Alright so it’s a 24 hour fitness and it’s not the nicest one in the country, but it meets my needs when I’m in need of a quick workout.
Awful customer experience. I was excited to try it out, given the hours and proximity to my apt and office – and gave it the benefit of the doubt of the negative reviews- but unfortunately they are all true. don’t go out in the cold to seek this gym like I did.
After 3 years as a member of this gym, I attempted to cancel my membership after leaving the city. The fact that even after having speaking with multiple team members confirming that the appropriate notes in my record had been entered acknowledging my request to cancel, I learned that my membership had not in fact been cancelled. After calling multiple times and speaking with multiple membership consultants who did not follow up on my request/respond to my e-mails, I had to dispute the charges with my credit card company. The fact that this also happened the last time I attempted to cancel my membership indicates what I believe to be a predatory merchant practice of making cancelling very very difficult.
I live around the area and this is probably one of the better gyms around here for their price range. Been going here for over 3 years. I love that it’s 24/hrs so I can work out during off peak hours when it’s not very crowded.
I don’t understand the bad reviews. Granted, it’s not like the other locations throughout the country. But, it’s not bad at all. If you’re about your training and not on your phone half the time, you’d realize how great a shape you can actually be in …..
Can’t beat a 24/7 gym. It has a pool but no steam room or sauna. Good big weight area and cardio area.
Love PeteMo’s classes – literally probably one of the only reasons why I go to this gym. Showers are pretty grimy though – don’t even think about going without flip-flops!
I tried the class with a friend and I liked it. The team was great in helping a newbie however I won’t be back. I am so out of shape and all these people look so much better than me it’s very intimidating. Good luck to those who keep it up.
Nice layout and equipment but not exactly an Ultra club considering other clubs with the SuperSport are the same or better because of newer equipment. I’m trying to figure out how this is actually considered an Ultra?
If you want to take a nighttime spin class, be sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before to claim a bike, particularly on Mon. and Tues. We LOVE Zack’s Tuesday 6 pm & Rommel’s Wednesday 6 pm classes.
Great gym great machines always working I have no complaints about this gym this is a super gym by definition. Just needs a basketball court.
I been a member for over a year l. Overall my experience have been the best. The staff is friendly and the place is always clean. I would definitely recommend this location to anyone!
