History

Phoenix Children’s Hospital was founded in July 1980 to meet the region’s growing need for pediatric care. It opened in 1983 within Good Samaritan Hospital with 124 pediatric beds. Over the years, the hospital expanded its capacity and services, performing Arizona’s first pediatric liver transplant in 1985 and growing to 172 beds by 1993.

In 1999, the hospital purchased a 22-acre plot for a new freestanding children’s hospital. This new facility opened in May 2002 with 230 beds and Arizona’s only pediatric emergency department. Subsequent expansions included a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in 2008, an 11-story tower in 2011, and a state-of-the-art emergency department and trauma facility in 2017.

In 2021, the hospital expanded to include the Women’s and Children’s Pavilion at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and a new emergency department and specialty clinic in Avondale, Arizona. Plans for a freestanding hospital in Glendale, Arizona, were announced in 2021, and a partnership with Bell Bank Park in Mesa, Arizona, was established in 2022. Most recently, in May 2024, Phoenix Children’s opened a new 44,000-square-foot Level IV NICU, the only one in Arizona.
